What's different about Trapinator?
Trapinator is a brand owned by Cmi Ltd and manufactured in Auckland, New Zealand. In the early part of 2003 a representative of Deparment of Conservation New Zealand, Darren Peters along with Phil Waddington visionary conservationist, engaged the assistance of Cmi who had aquired Curtis Springs. Darren Peters had been tasked with developing a new inovative trap that was humane on behalf of the Department of Conservation New Zealand. This trap would be required to target ship rats, Norway rats, Stoats, Weasels and Ferrets. All current traps up to this point had failed humane standards. Darron imported and tested a swedish designed trap which unfortunately would not set off light enough. Phil Waddington around this time had been working on his own designed and gave Darren Peters a call. Darren welcomed to see and share this new idea Phil had developed. Although fuctional, meeting the humane standard proved difficult. Phil put this aside and had a lightbulb idea for the Swedish design Darron first had been working on. A few days later Darren Peters received a call from Phil who said, "I think I can solve the problem with Swedish design not firing of light enough." Good news to Darren's ears, he planned a visit. Phil explained on paper in the first instance how he could meet the very low fire off weights with some modifications. Phils modificaton in practice was a success and The Doc Trap series was born. Phil Waddington had not finished there and teamed up again with Darren Peters and Ross Mitchell from Cmi to develop a new Possum Trap. Phil had made his concept Possum trap out of a timber box with a piece of string to reset the trap. Although functional, to commercalise it was then put to Ross Mitchell from Cmi that it should be assembled without a single bolt or screw. A difficult request, Phil persisted and Cmi came up with a design that satisfied. The requested benefit being, large deployment in the bush would make it easy to assemble. The Trapinator Possum brief was to make the trap better than anything on the market, light, durable, portable, effective, and easy to use. That was acheived, then it was Cmi turn to come up with something better than a timber box to house the Doc Series traps. After listening to complaints from those who have to place them out in the field about the weight, durabilty and fuctionality, we knew it was time for a facelift, in 2017 the Trapinator Mustelid tunnel was introduced to the market. Trapinator Traps are designed to kill possums, rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets, headhogs and Mongoose. The range was designed to eliminate predators and return the surrounding bush to its natural state.
